Super Sport started with a group of people who decided to go on a walk around Athens to find unfamiliar spaces for artists to explore creatively. Unlike most artistrun spaces, there is no curatorial direction, no fees to enter, and no artist statements to write. All that is suggested to the artists is to respond to a space, with any medium they wish and to allow themselves the inspiration to flow without limits. The comical title is borrowed from an abandoned factory in the area of Elaionas, which produced sports equipment, in opposition to established beliefs regarding how the contemporary artist must behave in order to adapt to the current art market.
Artists from a variety of mediums from graffiti to installation, painting, music, sculpture, and performance, are brought together to collaborate, to support each other and to evolve their practices within the modern ruins of Athens. This approach gives the chance to present an experience to the regular gallery visitor and to challenge the viewer to begin to see art through another lens.
Through events, workshops and in situ exhibitions, Super Sport gives value to the artist’s work and brings to light the difficulties that artists are facing in the everchanging climate of economic uncertainty we are presented with in our timeline.
